How Often Do You Need to See an Optometrist Based on Age?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends annual eye exams for individuals wearing glasses or contacts. Even without vision correction needs, yearly exams are essential. Certain conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure may require more frequent check-ups due to their impact on eye health.

As you age, the risk of eye diseases escalates. Individuals over 60 should undergo yearly examinations. For those over 40, biennial exams can help detect common age-related issues such as presbyopia, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

Pediatric Eye Exams in Cedar Rapids

Did you know that many preschoolers and school-aged children face vision problems? The AOA advises eye exams at six months, age three, and at the start of school. During a child's school years, regular check-ups are important for children who do not have vision problems or risk factors.

However, those with existing problems or certain risk factors should undergo more frequent examinations.

Factors like premature birth, developmental delays, family history of eye diseases, or previous eye injuries can increase the risk of vision problems. Children wearing glasses or contacts need yearly eye exams or as directed by their optometrist.

As proud members of the American Optometric Association, we offer InfantSEE®, a cost-free service ensuring early detection of potential eye problems regardless of income. This program makes eye care a fundamental part of infant wellness to enhance their quality of life.
